We take a look at the top 10 Australian companies – the industry’s biggest by annual revenue – in the Top 100 Australian Food & Drink Companies 2018 report, developed in collaboration with IBISWorld.
This year the list is again led by Fonterra – despite it reporting a loss in its latest financial results. The NZ dairy giant saw its revenue rise six per cent from 2017, which IBISWorld senior industry analyst Bao Vuong attributes to improved global prices for dairy.
Fonterra was followed by last year’s #2, the meat company JBS, and beverage giants Lion and Coca-Cola Amatil, which swapped places this year to take #3 and #4 position respectively.
Teys was the biggest mover in the top ten, jumping three spots to #5 this year, thanks to rising revenues of 11.1 per cent from 2017 to 2018.
"Factors that contributed to this jump include high domestic beef and lamb prices and an expected increase in industry output," Vuong says.
Murray Goulburn, last year's number six, has fallen out of the top ten due to the sale of its operating assets to Saputo Dairy Australia, which comes in at #34 on this year’s list.
Last year's number five, Treasury Wine Estates dropped to sixth spot, while poultry company Ingham's held steady at number seven.
Nestlé rose two spots to eighth despite reporting slightly lower revenues than the previous year, edging out bakery giants George Weston Foods, which held steady in ninth spot, and Goodman Fielder, which rose two spots on the back of higher revenues, to return to this year's list at number ten.
