In this episode, Food & Drink Business editor Kim Berry is joined by Yume Food founder and CEO, Katy Barfield. The Yume tech platform integrates with food manufacturers’ systems, connecting them to other businesses to sell, buy, or donate surplus food.

Katy shares the experience of starting the platform, an entirely new concept to the sector, and trying to get businesses on board. The realisation that existing processes to deal with surplus food were disorganised, ad hoc, and low down the priority scale meant Katy and the team knew they were in for a challenge. We also explore some of the options in the food waste hierarchy, calculating the cost of waste, and examples of how manufacturers recouped their costs and sold their surplus food items.

A few years on and Yume has rungs on the board with the calibre of companies using the platform and the amount of surplus food no longer going to landfill. The future is bright with plans to expand the platform to SMEs, donation options, and incorporate new and more difficult categories.

Packaging News

As 2025 draws to a close, it is clear the packaging sector has undergone one of its most consequential years in over a decade. Consolidation at the top, restructuring in the middle, and bold innovation at the edges have reshaped the industry’s horizons. At the same time, regulators, brand owners and recyclers have inched closer to a new circular operating model, even as policy clarity remains elusive.

Pact has reported a decline in revenue and earnings for the first five months of FY26, citing subdued market demand, as chair Raphael Geminder pursues settlement of the long-running TIC earn-out dispute.

PKN brings you the top 20 clicks on our website this year, a healthy mix of surprise and no-surprise. Pro-Pac Packaging led the list, Women in Packaging came in at #4, and Zipform's paper bottle at #15.
