Drones are just about set to deliver everything from takeaway meals to medication following testing in rural areas.
Project Wing, a part of the X 'Moonshot' project by Google's sister company Alphabet, has been conducting drone tests in the rural NSW community of Royalla, and making hundreds of deliveries of Mexican food and items from Chemist Warehouse.
The next step is to trial them in suburbia with the added navigational challenges like trees and powerlines, according to ABC News. Project Wing plans to launch its first deliveries in Tuggeranong, ACT in coming weeks, and recently hosted a barbecue to engage with locals and assess their needs.
The drones' range of sensors include GPS and a downward-facing camera, which is used as part of a back-up navigation system to ensure the drones fly safely.
Access to the data is only used for technical, de-bugging purposes and it's not published or shared with anyone outside the team, Project Wing said.
