Juice company Nudie has expanded into the carbonated beverages category with the launch of nudie & soda which is made from real fruit - a world first according to its maker.

The range was created to remove some of the guilt from the carbonated beverages category, and tap into the lucrative soft drink market which is triple the size of the juice market, according to Nudie.

Research indicates that 86 per cent of Australian people consume carbonated soft drinks and, of this group, 75 per cent of them feel guilty about doing so.

Nudie chief executive, James Ajaka told Food & Drink Business that the product was one of Nudie's biggest launches to date.

“Carbonated soft drinks are a $3 billion category in Australia, and the market is three times the size of the fruit juice category,” he says.

“We've created a world first by using 50 per cent real fruit, not concentrate and every 330 ml can will contain a serve of fruit.”

The product has somewhere between one and two per cent added sugar, according to Ajaka, and all the flavours are very Nudie-style flavours: orange mango & passionfruit; coconut water, apple, raspberry & cranberry; apple, lemon & ginger; apple & more apple; and apple, cucumber & kiwifruit.

The new nudie & soda also has no preservatives, colours, concentrates or artificial flavours, and no sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate or phosphoric acid. It contains on average 29 per cent less sugar that best selling non-diet cola soft drink in Australia.

“Our message to the market comes in the form of products we make, that we spent an enormous amount of time creating – and our whole brand position is creators of good and we live by that, innovate by that, and grow by that,” says Ajaka.

The product will be sold in select Caltex stores as well cafes and corner stores for a recommended retail price of $3.
