CBH Group has opened a new lupin processing plant in Western Australia, making it the first in Australia to produce lupin-based health food products on a commercial scale.

Lupin is a yellow legume that is high in protein and fibre and low in starch and oil that can be used as a substitute to wheat.

According to ABC Rural, the plant in Forrestfield will be the first in Australia to produce products like flour, flakes, hull, kibble and splits on a commercial scale.

The new entity, Lupin Foods Australia, was originally a joint venture between CBH Group and George Weston Foods, but last year the latter exited the venture and it is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of a grain growers' cooperative, the CBH Group.

The mill was originally intended to process lupin into stock feed but CBH Group since decided to explore and develop lupins as a health food.
