Poultry company Inghams plans to close its Aldinga Turkeys factory at McLaren Vale and will relocate its turkey processing to NSW.

The processing plant will close on 19 December in order to centralise its turkey processing at a plant in New South Wales.

Six turkey farms in the area supply 4000 turkeys a week to the Aldinga Turkeys factory, and the the company will reportedly continue to pay the farmers for six months, according to ABC Online.

Ingham had also reportedly flagged that the closure was a possibility.

Peter van Vliet from Inghams said: "This difficult decision to redirect turkey volumes to other processing sites that enable us to process turkey more efficiently and competitively means Inghams will have no further need for the seven turkey farms in the area.

"There may be some opportunities with other processors and/or layers, and Inghams is facilitating contact between growers and alternative processors and/or layers and will assist in the transition should they be successful in securing alternative contracts."
