Four key innovations that will be crucial to the success of the food facility in the future will be mapped out at the inaugural Food & Drink Business LIVE: Industry of the Future Forum 2014.

Wiley's process engineering director, Steve Christie, will be presenting on these, and how they will translate to food and beverage industry success, at the inaugural Food & Drink Business LIVE event on the morning of August 11 at Royal Randwick Racecourse, Sydney.

According to Christie, the greatest cause of high trade spend costs and diminishing profitability for local food manufacturers is the monopolisation of the industry by retail giants. While the current state of the nation may look bleak, there are opportunities for food processors that are willing to innovate and step away from the ways of old.

In order to capture these opportunities, Christie has identified four “game changers” for the industry which he will discuss in detail at the Forum, in his presentation entitled Think Different, Design Different, Deliver Progress: Avoid building an old new facility.

“The future looks fantastic,” says Christie, “and these big trends will help us to think different, design different and deliver progress.”

At the Forum, the Brand Guy, Richard Sauerman, will also uncover the forces that have propelled some of the world's biggest food brands to success, and Jean-Yves Heude, the former MD Kellogg Company ANZ, will reveal why food manufacturers have more clout than they think when it comes to the balance of power with major retailers.

David Beak, the head of one of Australia's largest suppliers of fresh ready meals and soups, Beak & Johnston, who has grown his business into a $330 million a year company over the past 30 years, will be talking about how other companies can also rise to the challenge.

Beak will be joined by Richard Glenn, general manager, sales & brand, Nudie, who will describe how this company has, in just over a decade, grown from a niche brand to become the number one brand in the chilled juice category in Australia.

For companies wishing to understand, embark on, and better manage the private label supply chain, Stuart Harman, partner, Oliver Wight Asia Pacific will provide important insight into how to capitalise on this growing trend.

Packaging News

The ACCC has instituted court proceedings against Clorox Australia, owner of GLAD-branded kitchen and garbage bags, over alleged false claims that bags were partly made of recycled 'ocean plastic'.

In news that is disappointing but not surprising given the recent reports on the unfolding Qenos saga, the new owner of Qenos has placed the company into voluntary administration. The closure of the Qenos Botany facility has also been confirmed.

An agreement struck between Cleanaway and Viva Energy will see the two companies undertake a prefeasibility assessment of a circular solution for soft plastics and other hard-to-recycle plastics.
