The ice cream market has stabilised after four years of decline and Bulla is the most popular brand according to Roy Morgan Research.

Bulla was purchased by 20 per cent of grocery buyers in an average four weeks, while Peters, the market leader as recently as 2011, is in second place at 17 per cent; ahead of Streets at 12 per cent. Coles, at 6 per cent, was the most popular of the supermarket brands.

Fastest growers were Streets (12 per cent, up from 10 per cent) thanks to its Blue Ribbon tubs and Connoisseur (6 per cent, up from 4 per cent) with its new exotic flavours.

73 per cent of Aussie grocery buyers purchased a tub or carton of ice cream at least once in the last 12 months, 21 per cent buy them every two to three months, but only three per cent buy them weekly.

“After four years of decline, the Australian ice cream market has stabilised, with the proportion of grocery buyers purchasing tubs/cartons last year creeping up from 72 to 73 per cent,” says Angela Smith, group account director, Roy Morgan Research.

“Amid this relatively static market, Connoisseur and Streets ice cream showed the most growth."
