Dublin based distillery, Teeling Whiskey, has launched its newest edition – the Explorers Series 15 Year Old Japanese Edition Irish Whiskey – in Australia. Pushing the boundaries of Irish whiskey craftsmanship, this expression incorporates Mugi Shochu casks for an Irish and Japanese influenced blend.

The company states that the Explorers Series celebrates the brave Irish explorers who have travelled the world to make their mark. Each Explorers Edition release embraces a nation’s character and personality by using unique casks or spirit types to capture their national identity.

The Japanese Edition is the first of the Explorers Series to be available outside of travel retail. It was matured in ex-bourbon barrels for 11 years, before an additional four years ageing in ex-Mugi Shochu spirit casks sourced from Japan.

Shochu is a Japanese spirit crafted from Mugi – Japanese barley. It is fermented using the traditional Koji process, distilled in a pot still, and matured in traditional Japanese oak casks, to create a light fruity spirit.

Incorporating the flavours from Mugi Shochu into Teeling Whiskey’s Japanese Edition has created a unique blend, an Irish whiskey infused with notes of toasted barley, lychee, and passion fruit.

Teeling Whiskey founder and managing director, Jack Teeling, said that the Explorers Series 15 Year Old Japanese Edition pushes the boundaries of Irish whiskey.

“Through a friend living in Japan we could source these casks directly and have been waiting patiently for over four years before we felt it was the right time to bottle up this one of a kind whiskey,” said Teeling.

“We believe this unique collaboration has resulted in a whiskey that truly represents the spirit of exploration, innovation, and craftsmanship that Teeling Whiskey stands for.”

Teeling Whiskey’s 15-Year Old Japanese Explorer's Edition is available in Dan Murphy’s for RRP $175.
