Safcol Australia, a supplier of fresh, packaged and frozen seafood has launched a spicy new tuna snack range that costs under $3.00.

The range has four variants: Mexican, Spicy Thai, Spanish and Italian. These are being positioned as a ready-to-eat snack or small meal and are packaged with a 'spork'.

The on-the-go meal offering is a popular new niche for the canned fish category. In January, Simplot launched a similar offering of its own: John West Tuna & Rice.

According to Dean de Villiers, marketing manager at Safcol Australia, the tuna used in its new meals is responsibly fished, and has been paired with either brown rice, legumes or pasta, depending on the variant.

Three of the products are also quite spicy, de Villiers says, in line with changing Australian tastes.

“We have developed these flavours specifically with Australians for Australians and have successfully, we believe, captured the need for convenience, taste and health,” he said.

Safcol’s Tuna Meals have a recommended retail price of $2.29 for a 110g pack and are available in Woolworths and Metcash.
