With the return of Australia's largest food manufacturing industry event foodpro after a six-year hiatus, Food & Drink Business profiles foodpro exhibitors about their business and the expo.

This week we speak to leading pump manufacturer Grundfos.

Grundfos on a mission to connect with sustainability focused businesses. As part of a global company, Grundfos was established in Australia in 1980 to meet and serve the unique needs of Australia’s agriculture, mining, industry, utilities, property, and domestic sectors.

Grundfos area managing director Oceania, Jamie Oliver said, “With the food and beverage industry continuing to grow, and with raising energy costs and carbon reduction commitments, companies are shifting to more sustainable production improving production efficiency.

“Grundfos partners with customers across dairies, soft drinks, breweries, and food processing to optimise their facilities by applying the full potential of intelligent pumping and control solutions. Every day, we are driving towards more sustainable, efficient, and smarter food and beverage production – without compromising the safety and quality that our world relies on.

“At foodpro, we hope to connect with partners in the food and beverage industry which have similar sustainable, energy efficient, and digital ambitions as us, to drive the food and beverage transformation in Australia,” said Oliver.

Key applications in the food and beverage industry

Grundfos solutions are focused on reducing environmental footprint, enhancing process efficiency through process optimisation and supporting customers in lowering total cost of ownership.

Expertise covers these key applications within food and beverage manufacturing:

Temperature control

Ensuring the right temperature in industrial production can be critical to food safety. But cooling and boiler processes are often operated inefficiently. With intelligent pump solutions, like Grundfos iSOLUTIONS, we enable manufacturers to take full control of their production to manage highly efficient and reliable food and beverage processes. This significantly improves operational equipment efficiency and helps achieve greater savings.

Industrial water treatment

Water is crucial in the F&B manufacturing process – from maintaining a reliable water supply for food and beverage production and enabling critical supporting processes, to ensuring the safe discharge or reuse of process water in compliance with today’s regulations. To guarantee high-quality water for each purpose, Grundfos has integrated intelligent solutions that help manufacturers optimise the entire water treatment cycle, from intake and distribution to handling of wastewater.

Industrial cleaning processes

Keeping processes clean is critical for maintaining food safety and hygienic conditions in the production environment. Grundfos iSOLUTIONS is able to withstand complex liquid compositions and extreme temperatures. Our solutions can also monitor and optimise operational performance while reducing energy, water, and the use of chemicals.

Intelligent dosing pumps

Safety and consistency are essential in the food and beverage business. Food manufacturers has dosing in their process can leverage on the Grundfos SMART digital dosing pump. Our smart drive strategies like AutoDeaeration, AutoFlowAdapt and always using 100 per cent stroke length allow for accurate, smooth and continuous dosing results in safe and reliable chemical delivery every time. Each SMART Digital dosing pump is not only safe and accurate, but it can pinpoint exactly where an issue occurs— allowing food and beverage manufacturers to monitor what’s happening in real-time, identify when it happened and keep the events in their records. Offering a high level of accuracy, digital dosing pumps not only reduce the chemical waste, but also the energy bill.

Grundfos MGE-motors

Grundfos is dedicated to keep at the forefront of the technological development, with a built-in frequency converter that is available in a range up to 11 kW with outstanding efficiency. Designed with total control, customer convenience and environmental sustainability in mind, our MGE motors are built into our pumps with AUTOADAPT and uses state-of-the-art components as well as dedicated control software, optimising the efficiency of the motor. Our latest MGE motors exceeds IE5 requirements by more than 2 per cent, having a motor efficiency of 95.7 per cent at 380V/2600 rpm. The combination of highly reliable, energy-efficient pumps and intelligent pump performance brings savings and customer benefits to a new level, where energy savings compared to unregulated standard pumps of today can be up to even 70 per cent.

Hydro booster systems

Grundfos hydro booster sets offer superb pressure control, optimal energy efficiency, and are the premium choice for any job where constant pressure is a must. A booster set from the Hydro Multi-E and MPC ranges can handle the operational challenges of any boosting application, and its easy set-up and connectivity makes it the preferred choice for complex systems within food and beverage manufacturing.

GENIbus

GENIbus is a pump data communication protocol developed and maintained by Grundfos. It connects Grundfos pumps to pump controllers or via gateways to monitoring and supervisory computers in Building Management Systems and SCADA systems. Grundfos devices with GENIbus can be wired together in networks and integrated in automation systems via protocols such as Bacnet, LONworks, Modbus, GSM and ProfiBUS and Ethernet, to support industries such as Food and Beverage manufacturers in pump control and monitoring.

Validation of 2050 net-zero target

Grundfos prides itself in being the first organisation in the water solutions sector to receive full validation of its 2050 net-zero target from the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) on 10 November 2022. SBTi is a climate action organisation that enables companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets grounded in science.

“In industrialised nations, our industries consume more than half the water available for human use. We are also aware that 70 per cent of all existing variable speed solutions are operating with factory settings, which means they are not optimised for the pump application.

“With our SBTi goals, our key focus is to enable end-users to save water through water reuse and water efficiency, as well as enabling our customers to save energy through innovation and delivering smart pumps and new solutions,” said Oliver.

Grundfos will be exhibiting at stand X12.
