Coca-Cola in Australia and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) are trialling a new generation of smart coolers, powered by artificial intelligence (AI), in partnership with Sydney Airport.

Coke&Go coolers, which are being trialled at Sydney Airport’s T2 Domestic terminal, use AI and image recognition technology to create a faster vending machine experience and reduce wasted stock.

Consumers can use a smartphone to scan a QR code, or tap a credit card, to unlock the fridge door and select their beverages. Products are recognised using image recognition technology and purchased via consumers’ linked payment methods.

Smart inventory tracking aims to ensure machines are stocked with the right beverages at the right time, helping to minimise waste. The vending machines also utilise a digital payment platform, Vendswift, which rewards users for their vending purchases.

CCEP Australia general manager of vending, David McKenna, said Coke&Go represents a leap forward for the vending industry.

“Our ambition at CCEP is to be at the forefront of innovation, including in vending where we’re always looking at alternatives that enhance convenience and improve the shopping experience for today’s digitally savvy consumer,” said McKenna.

“Coke&Go rethinks vending by using the latest technology to deliver a simple, seamless and unique self-service experience where consumers are able to hand-pick their chosen product off the fridge shelf.”
