Mondelēz International is transitioning the packaging of Cadbury Drinking Chocolate in Australia to Sonoco’s EnviroCan with a paper bottom, replacing the traditional metal-bottom paper can. The new packaging is made from over 60 per cent recycled cardboard and can be recycled in Australian kerbside bins.

The packaging redesign is part of Mondelez International's efforts to improve recyclability and support circular packaging solutions. It also includes a QR code linking to the company’s SnackingRight platform, which provides recycling guidance and information on sustainability initiatives.

John McEvoy, sales manager Australia/New Zealand at Sonoco, said the development of the paper-end can was a collaborative process. “Bringing the paper-end can to market was a true partnership. Both teams navigated design, testing, and implementation challenges with agility, providing expert support at every stage,” he said.

Natalie Thomas, research and development director, Australia, New Zealand and Japan at Mondelez International, said “By adopting the EnviroCan, we’re taking another step towards meeting our sustainability targets and empowering consumers to participate in responsible recycling practices.”

This shift is part of the global food company’s sustainability strategy, with a particular focus on meeting the expectations of environmentally conscious consumers and retailers in markets like Australia.
