Coles is now stocking the gluten-free yeast-based spread AussieMite in its supermarkets nationwide.

The 100 per cent Australian-owned savoury yeast spread was reformulated and rebranded late 2011 and officially relaunched in June this year. The product uses a corn-based yeast, making it gluten-free, unlike its major competitor Vegemite which uses a rye-based yeast. AussieMite is also additive and preservative free, and since its reformulation, contains a strong dose of vitamin B.

“This is a win-win story: AussieMite offers a great alternative to the all-pervasive spread that’s found in 9 out of 10 households in Australia,” AussieMite managing director Elise Ramsey said.

“This has not been an overnight success; AussieMite has been on shelf in Australia for some 12 years, re-branded, won a gold medal at the Packaging Council of Australia awards... and [we] fine-tuned the recipe late last year, adding vitamin B12.

“We have led the way in displaying non-GM labelling and providing generous proportions of B complex – good for stress and pregnancy – [and we] are endorsed by the Coeliac Society as certified gluten-free for the increasing number of people with wheat intolerances and are approved by the Vegetarian Society (UK).”

AussieMite is available in Thomas Dux and Coles supermarkets nationwide.
