Western Meat Packers Group has received a $300,000 grant from the West Australian Government towards the site’s $10 million expansion to further support the processing of offal and products at its Cowaramup abattoir.

WMPG was established in 1983 and has since grown to employ around 500 people. It has a weekly processing capacity of 2000 cattle and 1000 lambs, which is supplied to domestic and international markets.

WMPG CEO Andrew Fuda said the investment would help maximise yields from each beef animal and open to new markets, as well as creating 50 full-time new jobs.

“We’ve identified strong demand from our existing customers in Thailand, Korea, Hong Kong and Japan, plus we’re optimistic we’ll receive export license approval for China, a key target in our marketing strategy,” said Fuda.

“I sincerely thank the state government and Agriculture and Food Minister Alannah MacTiernan for their support and recognition of regional businesses such as ours.

“I also acknowledge the high-level planning and logistics by Western Meat Processors general manager Jamie Warburton and his very professional and dedicated team at Cowaramup.”

The WMPG Cowaramup abattoir has built its operational capacity to 70,000 cattle per annum in the past 15 years, with most distributed domestically and internationally under the Margaret River Fresh brand.
