Refrigerant Reclaim Australia (RRA) says its successful recovery of synthetic greenhouse gas refrigerants reflects the HVAC sector's commitment to reducing emissions and the crucial role that the refrigeration industry plays in helping to protect the planet.

Since its inception in 1993, RRA has worked with industry, wholesalers, and refrigerant distributors to collect unwanted ozone-depleting substances and synthetic greenhouse gases in over 500 locations across Australia.

Under the product stewardship program run by RRA to manage used and unwanted refrigerants at the end of their life, thousands of tonnes of CFCs, HCFCs & HFCs have been safely disposed of using Montreal Protocol-approved technologies.

Through a collective effort with the refrigeration industry, RRA has taken back and safely disposed of 10 million kgs of refrigerant, resulting in significant environmental benefits. This includes the prevention of more than 10 million tonnes of stratospheric ozone from being destroyed and more than 18.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent being prevented from emission.

RRA GM, Kylie Farrelley, said the refrigeration industry plays a crucial role in reducing the impact of climate change, and this milestone is a testament to this.

“The collective recovery efforts of licenced technicians throughout Australia must be commended, especially as technicians are often recovering refrigerant in volumes as small as a kilo at a time.

“Each kilo of refrigerant recovered from refrigerators, air conditioners, and heat pumps represents a significant step towards preventing harmful substances from entering our atmosphere. Every kilo counts, and together, our efforts amount to make a substantial impact,” Farrelley said.

The current per annum emissions abatement is equivalent of taking 238,000 vehicles off the road, every year, with the milestone serves as a reminder of the key role that individuals and industry play in protecting the planet.

RRA commends the refrigeration and air conditioning technicians for their diligence and recovery efforts and remains committed to its mission of working with the industry to reduce the impact of refrigerant gases on the environment.

“Together, we can make a significant impact and create a more viable future,” she said.

Packaging News

Orora’s half year results reflected a challenging market, for a business which has now transformed itself into a what it says is solely a beverage packaging operation, with global glass and Australasian cans as its focus.

Opal is assuring its packaging grade customers that its contingency plans mean supply will continue without interruption, as the lockout of its 308 workers at the Maryvale Mill enters its fourth week.

The board at consumer packaging giant Amcor used its half year results to urge shareholders to vote in favour of the proposed mega merger with Berry, and said not voting was the same as a no vote.
