Australian consumer-voted awards program Product of the Year (POY) is celebrating World Product Day with the release of its Top 10 Round Up of Australia’s favourite products. All products are previous winners of POY, showcasing how the market has evolved over the past decade.

World Product Day (27 May) is celebrated in many countries, with more than 50 virtual events happening throughout the day to highlight brands and products, as well as provide an opportunity to learn from entrepreneurs, innovators and business owners.

POY has chosen its top 10 products across a number of categories, including food, health and wellbeing, and skincare.

Products making the list include Berocca Twist n Go, Heinz Aioli, Cobs Pop’d Chips and Mater Nappies, all of which have become household staples, identified by “their performance and the fact that they are still available to purchase, even several years after their invention”.

“Looking back on the past 10 years, it’s so exciting to see over 70 per cent of our winning products standing the test of time, showing that they are still much loved by Australian consumers,” said POY director Sarah Connelly.

“As we head into a new decade of our awards program, and as shoppers become more discerning,  we are anticipating many brands will be creating new and relevant  products that will continue to support and excite shoppers in their day-to-day lives.”

POY is now in its 12th year, with entries for the 2021 Product of the Year awards now open for brands to enter with a new or improved product innovation.

Products must be launched between the 1 December 2018 and 31 May 2020 and demonstrate innovation through their function, design or packaging. The winning products will be announced in November 2020.

A new category – The Ones to Watch – has also been added to the awards this year, as it aims to recognise the “many innovative products do not have the budget or distribution at this stage of their development to enter into an awards program”.

“This award has been launched to give these smaller companies and start-ups an opportunity to benefit from nationwide research, gain insight into consumer perceptions of their product, and of course, have the chance to be crowned a ‘One to Watch Award’ Winner at the Product of the Year Awards for 2021,” said Connelly.

In Australia, the Product of the Year seal is backed by the votes of 10,000+ consumers and aims to provide a time and money-saving shortcut for shoppers, guiding them towards the very best products on shelves.

Packaging News

The ACCC has instituted court proceedings against Clorox Australia, owner of GLAD-branded kitchen and garbage bags, over alleged false claims that bags were partly made of recycled 'ocean plastic'.

In news that is disappointing but not surprising given the recent reports on the unfolding Qenos saga, the new owner of Qenos has placed the company into voluntary administration. The closure of the Qenos Botany facility has also been confirmed.

An agreement struck between Cleanaway and Viva Energy will see the two companies undertake a prefeasibility assessment of a circular solution for soft plastics and other hard-to-recycle plastics.
