Nestlé will delay the closure of the dairy section of its Tongala factory in regional Victoria, as it aims to ensure products remain on shelf for consumers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In August, Nestlé announced it would close the site between late 2020 and mid 2021. General manager Andrew McIver said it was because “people don’t buy tinned milk like they used to”, as well as cheap imports eroding the business.

The company now aims to close the dairy section of the factory in early 2021, and will align with the closure of its health nutrition section also due around the same time.

McIver said Nestlé’s primary focus was on supporting its staff.

“At the same time, it’s important that we make sure our products are available in store for consumers,” he said.

“To do this, we will maintain production at Tongala until early next year, while introducing products from other factories more gradually.”

Nestlé Australia was ranked #10 in Australia’s Top 100 Food & Drink Companies 2019 report.

The ACCC has instituted court proceedings against Clorox Australia, owner of GLAD-branded kitchen and garbage bags, over alleged false claims that bags were partly made of recycled 'ocean plastic'.

In news that is disappointing but not surprising given the recent reports on the unfolding Qenos saga, the new owner of Qenos has placed the company into voluntary administration. The closure of the Qenos Botany facility has also been confirmed.

An agreement struck between Cleanaway and Viva Energy will see the two companies undertake a prefeasibility assessment of a circular solution for soft plastics and other hard-to-recycle plastics.
