Lion has completed the $2 million solar power panels project at its XXXX Castlemaine Perkins brewery in Milton.

More than 2200 solar panels have been installed, which will generate enough electricity to power 150 homes in Brisbane every year.

Lion’s group supply chain director Ian Roberts says it will reduce the site’s annual carbon emissions by around 1260 tonnes, or seven per cent of CO2 emissions from electricity at the plant.

There is a big yellow wheel in Milton which supplied DC power to the brewery for more than half a century. Roberts says the wheel is going to stay, as a reminder of “how far we’ve come. It is change like this that has allowed us to preserve the brewery’s rich history and keep making Queensland’s favourite beer. This is something everyone at XXXX is very proud of”.

The solar panel project follows more than $5 million spent on the brewery over the last decade.

“In addition to the solar power system, we have also installed a state-of-the-art reverse osmosis plant which reuses waste water – enabling XXXX Gold to be produced at a ratio of 2.8 litres of water for every litre of beer produced, which is approaching world-leading levels of efficiency for brewing,” Roberts says.

The 690-kilowatt system will generate approximately 1,368,000 kilowatt hours every year.

Lion is committed to reducing its emissions by 30 per cent by 2025, from a 2015 baseline.
