HelloFresh is on track to become the first global carbon-neutral meal kit company as it commits to offsetting 100 per cent of its direct carbon emissions from 2020 onwards.

The company’s green energy and carbon reduction strategy aims to offset carbon emissions from internal operations offices, as well as corporate travel and delivery to customers.

Internationally, HelloFresh will partner with Berlin-based climate-tech start-up Planetly to invest in climate protection projects around the globe, and is expected to offset around 40,000 metric tonnes of carbon for 2020. 

Meanwhile in Australia, it will partner with the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor in the mid-west of Western Australia, which will aim to “return the environment to its origins by planting up to 40 native tree and shrub species in order to recreate a healthy and functioning biodiversity hotspot”.

“Given we are the first meal kit company in Australia, dating back to 2012, we feel it’s important to lead the way for sustainability action in the category,” said HelloFresh Australia CEO Tom Rutledge.

“This year, we have made it a priority to continuously evaluate, measure and reduce our carbon emissions. Our carbon offset programme is another step in amplifying our sustainability efforts. I am very happy about the progress we’re making towards becoming a more sustainable business and sustainable way of enjoying delicious home-cooked meals. 

HelloFresh Australia has also installed two 99kW solar generation systems on Sydney warehouse rooftop, and says it is on track to reduce its per meal carbon emissions in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 13.
