Three years after its debut in the US, William Grant & Sons is introducing Solerno – a blood orange liqueur made exclusively on the island of Sicily – to the Australian market.

Created by master distiller Lesley Gracie, the creator of Hendrick’s Gin, Solerno can be used as a base spirit as well as a modifying sweetener in classic cocktails, original creations and Italian-inspired aperitivi.

The blood oranges used in Solerno are picked at the height of a short growing season from the slopes of Mount Etna and the essential citrus oils are extracted and processed within 24 hours. This essential oil is then blended with Sicilian lemon and a quality neutral spirit base, and then lightly sweetened with natural sugar.

Solerno won the gold award for best liquor at the 2011 Los Angeles Wine and Spirit competition and the gold medal for design and packaging at the International Spirits Challenge.

It will initially be available through selected Australian bars and restaurants at RRP $70 and will be available to purchase from selected off-trade retailers later this year.

Packaging News

As Australia’s packaging reform agenda moves closer to implementation, APCO is strengthening its leadership and operational capability, appointing Tom Key as COO to help drive the systems and delivery capability needed for the next phase of reform.

Federal ministers yesterday convened an urgent industry roundtable on plastics supply chain pressures, placing packaging reform and domestic recycling capability firmly at the centre of discussions around Australia’s food security and manufacturing resilience.

The Australian Beverages Council has renewed calls for urgent national packaging reform, saying global supply disruptions highlight the need for stronger domestic recycling and harmonised EPR.
