An Australian company is the first vegetable oil producer to gain the palm-oil free POFCAP trademark.
The world’s first Palm Oil Free Certification Trademark and Certification Program (POFCAP) has assessed the first vegetable oils applying to use the trademark, and these are from Australian company, MSM Milling.
There are currently a high number of food products containing vegetable oil, and most products which include vegetable oil in their ingredients include a blend which contains palm oil, according to POFCAP.
MSM Milling has had eight of its edible oils, and an expeller-pressed canola meal product, successfully assessed by POFCAP’s certification process.
The oilseed processing operation turns canola seed, bought direct from Australian farmers, into value-added oil and meal products.
POFCAP co-founder Debra Mineely said the assessment was a significant step given the prolific use of vegetable oil in so many products.
The Australian founded certification trademark has, since launch, been granted approval by the relevant government authorities of nine countries to certify products in those regions, with a further nine applications currently pending.
Since its inception in late 2017, it has assessed 616 products and certified them palm-oil free, including soaps made in Ireland and Australia, skincare from Scotland, American snacks, spices and nut butters, Isle of Man Christmas puddings, and pet food
