Metsa Group and Amcor are working together to develop a fibre-based food tray that combines Metsa's 3D moulded fibre solution, Muoto, with Amcor’s high-barrier liner and lidding film technology.

The resulting packaging is designed to be used in food applications including modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), while remaining recyclable in the paper stream in most markets. According to the companies, the tray has a CEPI recyclability score of over 80 per cent, with plans in place to develop a fully compostable version in the future.

Muoto, made from renewable wood pulp, is both recyclable and biodegradable. Developed by Metsa Spring, it is suitable for a range of uses from takeaway containers to industrial packaging. When combined with Amcor’s film, it gains additional functionality such as high-performance sealability and barrier protection.

Jarkko Tuominen, vice president, Projects at Metsa Spring, describes the collaboration as “a significant step forward in more sustainable packaging innovation”, highlighting the companies' commitment to reducing environmental impact.

Amcor contributes fibre-based packaging via its AmFiber global portfolio and speciality carton products. According to the company, its liner technology enables formability and strength in fibre-based trays to meet a range of performance requirements.

Ilya Syshchikov, vice president, Fiber at Amcor, said, “Both parties bring a wealth of materials, packaging, and market knowledge to deliver more sustainable solutions to our customers with exceptional quality, functionality, and efficiency.”

The first trays developed under this collaboration are expected to be commercially available in Europe later this year.
