Aldi UK has launched its first own-label wine in aluminium packaging. The supermarket says the aluminium packaging offers sustainability benefits, weighing just 95g – around 75 per cent lighter than a standard glass bottle – and is fully recyclable.

According to the company, the lighter packaging enables transport savings of more than 5 tonnes per truckload.
The wine is imported from Italy and bottled at a UK winery powered entirely by renewable energy. This move is part of Aldi’s broader efforts to minimise the environmental impact of its packaging.

Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, said, “Our buying teams are constantly exploring ways to offer greater value and greener choices for our customers. Shoppers are looking for ways to make a difference, and we’re proud to be leading the way with innovations like this aluminium wine bottle, building on our commitment to sustainable packaging.”

The project was developed in collaboration with Broadland Drinks. Catherine Smith, Broadland Drinks’ commercial director, explained: “We know the biggest factor in a bottle of wine’s carbon footprint is the bottle itself, so by switching from glass to aluminium, we can help meet the rising demand for alternative lower carbon formats.”

Aldi’s launch comes shortly after being named Sustainable Drinks Retailer of the Year at the 2025 Drinks Retailing Awards. Previous efforts by the retailer have included introducing lightweight glass bottles with Lanchester Wines and offering own-brand wines in paper bottles.

The Costellore Pinot Grigio hit the shelves on 14 April, priced at £5.99.

Consolidation at the top, restructuring in the middle, and bold innovation at the edges have reshaped the industry’s horizons. At the same time, regulators, brand owners and recyclers have inched closer to a new circular operating model, even as policy clarity remains elusive.
