Wide Open Agriculture says its proprietary lupin protein milk formulation marks a significant advancement in its mission to realise the potential of lupin as a globally relevant food protein. It has lodged a patent to protect the breakthrough technology.

The company says the new formulation delivers a clean flavour, creamy texture, and foaming performance – qualities that have long eluded developers of lupin-based milks.

WOA chair, Yaxi Zhan, said the achievement represents a turning point for the category.

“The barrier to entry for any lupin-based milk has always been a technological one. Our team has now overcome that barrier. The formulation cannot be replicated without our proprietary protein and process know-how, which positions WOA at the forefront of this exciting new global milk analogue category,” Zhan said.

The company plans to leverage its established international channels to commercialise the formulation through partnerships with global B2B distributors.

The launch followed WOA announcing its China market strategy with distribution partner Univar Solutions China. Univar identified the country’s fast-growing tea and coffee beverage sectors – worth around $68 billion (RMB 321 billion) – as priority entry points for WOA.
