Wine for good is the slogan of Australian wine brand The Hidden Sea, which has joined the fight against Ocean Plastics through a partnership with global organisation ReSea Project, committing to remove 1 billion plastic bottles from the world’s oceans by 2030.

With every bottle of The Hidden Sea purchased, the brand has pledged to remove the equivalent of 10 plastic bottles from the ocean in a verified, trackable process. A QR code received from ReSea Project post purchase allows consumers to see the real difference their purchase has made to the planet.

ReSea Project, headquartered in Denmark and operating on the ground in Indonesia, is a pioneer in the trackable removal of plastic from the world’s oceans. It says it is on a mission to “remove plastic from the ocean, recycle it, and create awareness about proper waste handling”. It reports having removed 400,000kg of plastic in 2019, and is on target to more than double that figure in 2020. Its circular solution focuses on recycling the collected plastic and engages local communities in the clean-up, improving living conditions in those communities, and at the same time raising awareness of proper waste disposal to prevent plastic from ending up in the ocean.

 

According to ReSea Project estimated that more than 8 million tonnes of plastics enters the world's oceans every year, on top of the approximately 150 million tonnes already in the ocean.

Co-founder of The Hidden Sea, Justin Moran, believes Australians cannot wait any longer, action must be taken and the time is now.

“The average person disposes of 55kg of plastic each year, with the bulk of which ending up in our oceans. There’s no more ‘business as usual’ and as humans, we cannot keep turning a blind eye to the ocean-plastic crisis. Our oceans are suffocating and urgent action needs to be taken,” Moran said.

“Our approach has always been that while it isn’t our plastic, it is our planet, so we need to act now and do what we can to save it.

“While our wine is phenomenal, world-class and beautifully crafted, our mission isn’t about selling wine, it’s about making a true difference to our oceans and our planet, and creating a movement of like-minded, socially conscious consumers who want to do something bigger than themselves.”

Every bottle of The Hidden Sea sold will see the removal of the equivalent of 10 plastic bottles, and every six pack sold removes 1 kilogram of plastic from the ocean.
