West Australians are the most likely to pick up a pack of free range eggs at the supermarket, and Queenslanders are twice as likely to buy battery cage eggs than their WA counterparts, according to a consumer survey.

Researcher Canstar Blue asked 3,000 adults whether they bought cage eggs, free range/organic eggs, or Barn laid/cage free eggs.

It found 29 per cent of Queenslanders bought cage eggs compared to just 12 per cent in WA. Queenslanders were found to be least likely to buy free range eggs: 44 per cent compared to 59 per cent in WA.

Overall, 51 per cent of Australian consumers were found to favour free range/organic eggs, while 22 per cent said they buy cage eggs. A further 14 per cent go for the middle ground of barn laid/cage free eggs and the remaining 13 per cent were unsure which type they buy.
