WA's largest independent dairy processor Brownes will reportedly be put on the market sometime next year.

The independent company manufacturers Brownes- and Chill-branded white and flavoured milk, yoghurt, creams, custards, dairy desserts, juices and cheese.

Brownes was formerly owned by Fonterra, but was bought by private equity firm Archer Capital in 2011, which is now seeking to exit its investment, with Moelis & Co handling the Brownes sale process, according to The Australian Financial Review.

Since then it has been rationalised in a bid to boost its profitability, and two years ago, its processing operations were centralised into a single facility in Balcatta, Perth.

Brownes is one of the largest buyers of farmgate milk in Western Australia, and it collects more than 144 million litres of milk from over 61 dairy farmers each year from farms in the south west of WA, according to its website.
