Unilever has voluntarily recalled its Blue Ribbon Ice Cream due to the presence of plastic in some tubs.

The company said it initiated the recall after plastic was found in a small number of tubs, with the cause reportedly due to an operational issue during the production process.

Unilever owns a number of well-known brands including Streets, and its Blue Ribbon ice cream is manufactured in western Sydney.

The recall extends to Blue Ribbon Ice Cream with best before dates between 28 April 2017 and 27 April 2018.

"We have been made aware of a very small number of cases where plastic has been found in these products and advise our consumers not to eat these tubs," Unilever said on its Facebook page.

"If your product is affected by this recall, you can return your empty tub to your place of purchase for a full refund. For further information please contact us on 1800 801 885. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience."
