Treasury Wine Estates is shutting its historic South Australian Ryecroft facility, which makes Rosemount Estate wines, and will shift production to other wineries in the state.

According to TWE's wine production director for Australia and New Zealand, Peter Taylor, Ryecroft had been operating at around half its capacity for several years.

"It is simply not sustainable for this to continue," he said. "Rosemount wines previously made at Ryecroft will continue to source their fruit from McLaren Vale and surrounding regions - the only change is the location where the wine will be made."

The shutdown is expected to take several months, and the 33 Ryecroft workers are eligible to apply for alternative positions within TWE.

TWE was recently the subject of a potential $3.1 billion buyout by two separate private equity firms which conducted due diligence on its operations, but neither have proceeded.
