Simplot Australia has received the 2018 Foodbank Award in recognition of its work in tackling food insecurity in Australia.

The award was presented during a dinner at a food and grocery conference held in Melbourne this week.

Foodbank Australia CEO Brianna Casey said Simplot "unfailingly answer our call and make their crucial contribution with commitment and passion".

The Foodbank Award is presented annually to a company for showing vision, innovation and leadership in working with Foodbank.

Simplot Australia has been a partner in the Collaborative Supply Program for six years, and last year saw the milestone of one million jars of Leggo’s Pasta Sauce from Simplot’s Echuca factory donated to Foodbank.

“The program has achieved sustainability because of Simplot’s willingness to encourage the other companies involved in its supply chain," Casey said.

The production of Leggo’s Pasta Sauce involves 12 suppliers, the largest number of partners in any Collaborative Supply Program. Eight of these support the program by donating their contributions. In addition to Simplot, this includes Kagome, Ingredion, Invicta, Sunshine Sugar (Manildra Group), Amcor, Mathews and Cheetham Salt, with additional funding from the Flight Centre Foundation.

The ACCC has instituted court proceedings against Clorox Australia, owner of GLAD-branded kitchen and garbage bags, over alleged false claims that bags were partly made of recycled 'ocean plastic'.

In news that is disappointing but not surprising given the recent reports on the unfolding Qenos saga, the new owner of Qenos has placed the company into voluntary administration. The closure of the Qenos Botany facility has also been confirmed.

An agreement struck between Cleanaway and Viva Energy will see the two companies undertake a prefeasibility assessment of a circular solution for soft plastics and other hard-to-recycle plastics.
