Murray Goulburn has sold its Tasmanian dairy factory to Thai company Dutch Mill the day before it was due to close.

The Edith Creek factory was the only asset MG withheld from the potential sale of the Victorian dairy co-operative to Canadian family dairy company Saputo Inc.

In May, MG announced the closure of the Edith Creek plant, along with dairy factories at Rochester and Kiewa.

MG had been dealing with a number of companies on the sale of the factory, including TasAsia Dairy.

Dutch Mill had already been purchasing dairy farms in the Circular Head region.

The latest sale includes the land and all assets associated with the site.

Rival offers for the facility were believed to be in the region of $12 million to $19 million.

Anthony Guinness, spokesperson for Dutch Mill Australia, said the company expected to open the plant in the second quarter of 2018.
