Sydney's Martin Place played host to a pop-up market showcasing the best gourmet food stall holders hand picked from various markets around Sydney.

The event at Martin Place on Thursday organised by online directory, Local Market Guide, featured the "best of the best handpicked traders in quality food produce and lifestyle products from various local markets around town" and kicked off a month-long celebration of all markets in and around Sydney.

The artisan product companies selected to attend the launch included Brasserie Bread, Gwydir Grove (olive oils), Inside Out Nutritious Goods, Tarlat Thai (pre-cooked take home healthy Thai meals) and Pod Cuisine (pre-biotic gluten free food), Pepe Saya, Dessertmakers, Keys to Fine Food, Rarlat Thai, Maggie McKeevers, Briliant Food, Ttotaler and go-go healthy.

As part of the celebrations, each Sydney market will this month showcase various activities alongside their regular markets. For example, Bondi Markets will be running a workshop on how to make butter, and Paddington Markets will be converting to an organic market for the day.

Markets in May organiser Edwina Volz, director Local Market Guide, said demand for markets was growing as consumers opted to buy local.

"We want it fresh and organic, we want it locally made and we love supporting small local business," she said.

Over 200 markets now operate in the greater Sydney region every month.
