Australian outdoor clothing and gear retailer Mountain Designs has created an eco-friendly new clothing range made using recycled coffee grounds.

The grounds are used in the insulation of its high performance outdoor jackets, which is made from a mix of recycled coffee fibre and ethically-sourced down.

According to Mountain Designs product developer Sandra Heidemann, the company always uses ethically-sourced down, but it wanted to go further and also reclaim and re-use waste, so over 18 months, it developed this new way to use coffee grounds, which usually end up in landfill.

The coffee fibre and down combination provides outstanding comfort and warmth, according to Heidemann, and the natural qualities of coffee fibre also helps absorb odour which does not release until the item is washed.

Also, while down doesn’t dry quickly, the coffee fibre dries very fast which means the range will dry quicker than a traditional down jacket.

“Our team of in-house designers and product specialists are constantly evaluating our products and researching and testing new ways to make them more resilient, useful and comfortable in outdoor conditions,” Heidemann said.

“This innovative, environmentally friendly product range is helping change, for the better, the way outdoor clothing can be made in the future.”
