A new cellulose-based packaging film that is particularly suited for delicatessen products like pre-sliced meat and cheese has been launched by Australian packaging company Amcor.

The Packpyrus film is a thermo-formable cellulose-based packaging solution and its oxygen barrier makes it particularly suitable for the fresh food market.

It offers significant improvement in life cycle performance compared to competing films, according to Amcor, and the product also has a “kraft paper” natural look and feel, for enhanced product differentiation on shelf.

The Packpyrus product comes in three versions: Packpyrus Flexible for vacuum pack base webs; Packpyrus Semi-Rigid; and Packpyrus Rigid for modified atmosphere base webs. It also has environmental credentials due to its lightness, use of renewable fibres and optimised manufacturing processes.

According to Amcor, the products offer a reduction in the cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of about 70 per cent for Packpyrus Flexible and 60 per cent for Packpyrus Rigid.

“As a global packaging leader, Amcor believes in responsible packaging and is committed to reducing environmental impacts of all our operations and throughout our products' total life cycles,” the company said.
