A New Zealand businessman has been charged over the 1080 milk contamination threat that affected Fonterra and Federated Farmers last year.

The 60-year-old Auckland businessman was arrested in New Zealand after an 11 month investigation.

In March it was revealed that police had tested infant milk formula tins and ruled out contamination with 1080 pesticide, after the NZ dairy companies received letters calling for an end to the use of 1080, along with milk packages that tested positive for the poison.

The letters contained threats that infant formula and other products would be contaminated if New Zealand did not stop using the poison by the end of March.
