Lion has initiated a voluntary recall of its new Dare ready-to-drink cold-pressed coffee after it discovered the beverage is at risk of bursting.

Lion was in the process of rolling the new product out across grocery and convenience channels in NSW. The launch aimed to bring the cold press coffee process from boutique cafés to the mainstream.

“This recall is due to concern that if product is left unrefrigerated, there is a risk of the bottles bursting, which could potentially cause damage or injury,” a Lion spokesperson said.

The new product was made from a blend of cold pressed Arabica coffee and premium Arabica coffee, made with fresh milk and served in a 320ml bronze metal finish bottle.

The bottle is pressurised like a soft drink and the problem occurs when the aluminum bottles are left unrefrigerated.

Lion had hoped the historical cold-pressed steeping process would differentiate the new product from other mainstream iced coffees, including its own.

“Dare Cold Pressed Coffee is creating an entirely new segment within the dairy beverage category,” Nicholas Bartram, Lion's brand manager, said at the time of the launch.

The cold-press technique is seen as a superior form of coffee extraction as it has a less bitter taste than espresso hence the reason the coffee can be served cold, Lion said.

Lion said any existing stock should be disposed of by pointing the bottle downwards and away from your face and body and gradually unscrewing the lid.

A Lion spokesperson said the future of the product was currently being reviewed.
