Global cereal giant Kellogg is facing off with Aussie tennis star Thanasi Kokkinakis over the Special K brand.
Kokkinakis is fighting for the right to use his Special K nickname commercially, despite Kellogg’s ownership of the trademark in Australia.
The tennis player is hoping to leverage his nickname in a branding campaign on clothing, shoes, equipment, and consultancy and coaching, according to reports.
Kellogg first opposed Kokkinakis' trademark bid in August 2015, and then again in the Federal Court in Adelaide last week, with the next step being mediation in August.
“The hearing on Special K TM has finished and procedural directions given," Kellogg said in a statement last week. "We’ll continue to defend our iconic and much loved Special K brand."
