Sales of Nuchev goat's milk formula brand Oli6 are expected to soar following three years of research in which it was pitted against other types of milk.
RMIT University found Australian-made Oli6 goat’s milk formula is good for gut health when compared with cow’s milk formula and fresh goat milk.
Scientists found the Oli6 formula contained 14 naturally ocurring prebiotics oligosaccharides (oligos), five of which are also found in human breast milk.
According to Nuchev, oligos feed gut bacteria, which helps support immunity and digestive health, as well as the maintenance of a healthy weight and brain function.
The study also measured the potential of different types of milk, formulas, and artificial prebiotics to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria and reduce gastrointestinal infections.
The natural oligos in Oli6 formula were also found to inhibit the ability of harmful bacteria such as pathogenic E. coli to attach to human intestinal cells.
Almost one third of all cases of diarrhoea in children are attributed to pathogenic E. coli bacteria.
Oli6 goat milk has experienced rapid growth over the past four years, with the goat milk formula category now worth more than $105 million annually, accounting for nearly 11 per cent of pharmacy formula sales.

Oli6 is now stocked in more than 1000 pharmacies, and last year launched into Chemist Warehouse as the only Australian goat milk formula stocked across its 370 stores. Oli6 is also sold through 200 independent supermarkets.
Nuchev founder Ben Dingle said the research findings endorsed the company’s founding ambition to provide a premium product that delivered on health promises.
“Goat’s milk has up to six times the number of prebiotic oligosaccharides than cow’s milk, so we could see there were human health benefits that cow’s milk couldn’t replicate: less intolerance or allergies; easier to digest; and structurally closer to human breast milk than cow’s milk,” he said.
