A two-year $9 million packaging, handling and distribution upgrade at George Weston Foods' Tip Top Bakeries factory in Springwood is complete.

The upgrade began in 2011 and improvements include a new automated packaging and handling equipment, upgrades to staff amenities, and workshop, cleaning and stores areas, and a new warehouse and distribution centre.

The bakery opened its doors 30 years ago and every day, seven days a week, over 200,000 units of Tip Top bread and muffins and other bakery products such as rolls, Golden crumpets, pikelets and pancakes are produced on-site. The facility supplies bread to 14 regional depots across Queensland servicing 2800 customer points.

“This multi-million dollar investment will help future-proof the jobs of our Springwood staff for many more years to come, ensuring we continue to produce and deliver the highest quality product, daily across Australia,” managing director of Tip Top Bakeries, Andrew Cummings, said.

The Springwood facility employs 392 full-time staff and is one of the local community’s largest employers, and the upgrade was officially unveilled on Tuesday by Logan City Council Mayor Pam Parker.

“Having a well-recognised company like Tip Top invest millions of dollars to expand its local operations is a big tick of approval for the city. This investment is recognition of the perfect position Logan City is in to allow food and beverage companies to produce and distribute their products to the whole of Queensland,” she said.
