First fatality linked to frozen pomegranate recall
A woman has died after contracting hepatitis A that is thought to be linked to recalled frozen pomegranate product.
The 64-year-old South Australian woman died after spending some time in hospital, according to ABC News.
Entyce Food Ingredients said it was "deeply saddened" by reports of the woman's death in a statement, according to the report.
"Entyce will work closely with health authorities and the SA Coroner to help determine the exact cause of the woman's death and if there was any direct link with the consumption of frozen pomegranate arils and hepatitis A."
24 cases have now been linked to the pomegranate product made by Entyce Food Ingredients nationally, but this is the first fatality, as death caused by hepatitis A is rare, with most making a full recovery.
2000 packs of the Creative Gourmet 180g frozen pomegranate arils were sold at Coles supermarkets before they were recalled in April.
The incubation period for hepatitis A is generally 15 to 50 days, so no more cases are anticipated because of the length of time since the product was recalled
