A TV advertisement that implies the passengers of the Titanic could have survived the 1912 shipwreck if they had been drinking Red Bull is not going down well in the UK.

The ad, which has so far aired on TV in Germany and Britain, has attracted 150 complaints to the latter's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to date.

The Titanic Heritage Trust is among the critics. It says that the beverage company is using the tragic event to promote and sell its products without care for the people who were lost.

In the ad, a crate of the energy drink is being hoisted onto an ocean liner, but the captain puts a stop to it, saying only champagne is allowed on board his ship.

The man loading the crate says "But Red Bull gives you wings!"

"Wings? Why on Earth would you need wings on a ship? Stupidest thing I've ever heard," replies the captain. The name of the ship is then revealed.

The ASA has announced that though some people may be offended by the advert, it would take no action.
