The CWA made more than 50,000 scones at this year's Sydney Royal Easter Show. Woolworths expects to have sold more than 72 million hot cross buns and 25 million chocolate eggs this Easter period.
According to industry analyst IBISWorld, consumers were expected to spend more than $210 million on chocolate this Easter, or $10 per capita. Anyone clinging to new year resolutions to lose weight was doomed.
There are growing trends for premium products and also for more niche offerings like organic and vegan markets.
The National Retail Association (NRA) expected Easter spending to be almost $3.4 billion nationwide, a 2.24 per cent increase on 2018.
NRA figures projected consumers to spend $28.7 million on fish and seafood, $157.2 million on alcohol, $69.7 million on pubs and bars, and $7.3 million on eggs (of the chicken variety), over the Easter period. Meanwhile Woolworths expected to sell more than 240,000 prawns and 150,000 kilos of fresh Tasmanian salmon.
