Brisbane-based wholesaler Di Bella Coffee has launched a new biodegradable coffee capsule for its Peru Organic variety.

Every part of the capsule, including fibres, starch, proteins, lipids, and additives of natural origin is 100 per cent biodegradable, according to Di Bella.

Roaster Phillip Di Bella said the company’s motivation to add the biodegradable capsule to its range was in response to demand from coffee lovers and consumers searching for eco-friendly capsules.

“Our customers love the convenience of coffee capsules and that they save them time and money, but are becoming concerned with the effects capsules are having on the environment,” he said.

The capsule is also Nespresso-compatible, and will biodegrade in normal landfill within 180 days.

The Peru Organic variety has been sourced directly from the farmer and has been grown and processed without the use of chemicals or pesticides.

The capsules can be bought from the company's retail cafe in Bowen Hills Queensland or bought online on the company's website.

According to Euromonitor research, two million capsules are used and discarded into landfill each day in Australia.
