David Jones is building a mini-supermarket in Melbourne's South Yarra, with more standalone food stores reportedly on the way.

The 500-square metre store, which will open next year in the Capitol Grand development on Chapel Street, is said to be the first in a string of standalone food stores planned by the retailer that will focus on premium fresh produce and pre-prepared meals.

A private label food line called David Jones Food will make up the majority of products at the store, according to Fairfax Media.

The retailer is also building and refurbishing existing food halls, and opening new stores and food halls in suburban areas.
