New country of origin labels could cause confusion in some categories such as juice because of the way they are made.

The new labelling system, which kicks of from July 1, will show what percentage of the contents are Australian.

Many of the fruit juice products sold in Australia, however, are a mixture of overseas-sourced concentrate and Australian water, according to an ABC Rural report.

Lencia Fruit Juices director Paul Plunkett told ABC Rural that while the new labels would help consumers who were looking to buy Australian, those manufacturers that were using foreign concentrate would be able to label their products as majority Australian.

"The science behind the formulation probably says that's what should be done, but I think the consumer would find that pretty misleading," he said.

Plunkett said while any effort to help consumers make better choices was positive, they may in some cases, confuse consumers even further.
