Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) has opened a technologically advanced juice and sports drinks facility in Auckland, New Zealand to tap into new opportunities in the still beverages category.

The new Keri Juice plant is located at Auckland International Airport's Landing Business Park and is capable of manufacturing 800,000 bottles a day.

The plant will manufacture juices, flavoured waters, cordial and sports drinks including the full Keri Juice range, Powerade, Fuze Tea, Glaceau Vitaminwater, E2, Thexton's, Baker Halls & Co and Pump water.

Four operations were consolidated into one centrally located plant, and the purpose-built 10,000 square meter plant reportedly doubles the capacity of previous plants.

The plant took 14 months to build, will employ 35 full time staff, and houses state-of-the-art production and packaging technology, which will help boost CCA's environmental credentials.

The company is reportedly debuting its Nitro Hot-Fill processing method in New Zealand, which creates lighter bottles and uses less plastic, although traditional packaging methods such as Blow-fill and Warm-fill technologies will also be used.

Minister for Economic Development, Steven Joyce announced the plant this week, and the opening was also attended by Powerade ambassador and two-time Olympic Gold medallist, Mahe Drysdale.

Packaging News

The ACCC has instituted court proceedings against Clorox Australia, owner of GLAD-branded kitchen and garbage bags, over alleged false claims that bags were partly made of recycled 'ocean plastic'.

In news that is disappointing but not surprising given the recent reports on the unfolding Qenos saga, the new owner of Qenos has placed the company into voluntary administration. The closure of the Qenos Botany facility has also been confirmed.

An agreement struck between Cleanaway and Viva Energy will see the two companies undertake a prefeasibility assessment of a circular solution for soft plastics and other hard-to-recycle plastics.
