Gloria Jean’s is tapping into the lure of sponge cake and combining it with the convenience of sandwiches with its launch of the 'cakewich'.

The Cakewich is made from soft sponge cake in the shape of a triangle with a sweet filling. It looks like a sandwich but tastes like cake.

The coffee chain says that like the recent rise of the macaroon and the cronut, it hopes its bakery creation will take off in Australia.

Moreover, Gloria Jean’s says it has surveyed Australians and found that 42 per cent of respondents would give up Facebook, TV, smartphones, Snapchat/Instagram/Tinder and even email in exchange for a piece of cake. It also found, however, that many are too busy to indulge.

“As the world gets more connected, it seems as though life gets more and more hectic and it gets difficult to find time to enjoy even simple pleasures,” said Nicole Saleh, Group Brand and Marketing Manager for Gloria Jean’s Coffees.

“We want our guests to enjoy the perfect complement to a coffee while on-the-go. From our research we knew that people’s lives are often too busy to sit down and indulge in a piece of cake, so instead we are offering a classic snack option that fits perfectly into modern life – the Cakewich.”

According to the company, the Cakewich is the perfect snack for the 42 per cent of people who enjoy eating in their car. It is also designed with the commuter in mind.

The Cakewich will be exclusively sold in Australia by Gloria Jean’s Coffees and it is available in two flavours: Chocolate Mousse and White Chocolate and Raspberry.
