Fruit and vegetable producers are growing smaller crops as the 'mini-veg' trend gathers traction.

South Australia wholesaler Wally Gallarello told Adelaide Now the trend started with cherry tomatoes and moved on to mini cucumbers about a decade ago.

Gallarello, who owns produce company Fresh Fruit for You, said the likes of mini Rockit apples, along with baby capsicum, were all fighting for attention in the fruit and veggie aisles.

Parents find the 100g to 150g punnets of tomatoes and cucumbers useful for lunchboxes, and the sales are driven by more affluent consumers looking for novelty and convenience.

Horticulture giant Perfection Fresh is behind many new varieties, with Gallarello saying the national company, which has glasshouses at Two Wells, is continually researching new varieties around the world, securing patents and getting new products into the Australian market.
