Australia's largest private rooftop solar array is now helping to power operations at Sydney Markets in Flemington Sydney.

The installation is Australia’s largest private sector rooftop solar system on a single site, according to Sydney markets.

“This solar system will enable us to generate sustainable energy, as well as drastically reduce our carbon footprint,” Sydney Markets CEO Brad Latham said.

“In order to extract the same amount of CO2 from the atmosphere, 676 hectares of trees would need to be planted each year.”

Last year, Sydney Markets unveiled a solar car park with almost 1MW of capacity, and now the addition of an $8.9 million 2.2MW array on the rooftops of the Markets brings its capacity to more than 3MW.

Sydney Markets' 8594 panels can currently power 11 per cent of its operations, and thanks to additional roof capacity, it has the ability to expand its solar installation to more than triple the energy output of the current system.

Sydney Markets is one of the largest food distribution centres in the Southern Hemisphere, and the site at Flemington spans 43 hectares.
